Our Baby, Walking and Talking

Here are two recent videos of Eila for you tonight!

The first, some of you may have seen already, but it’s cute enough to post again here…

The second is fresh from this afternoon.  It’s Eila’s first walk outside without a stroller or her wagon.  I mean, she’s technically walked outside before this.  But this is the first time we went for a walk with her just on her two shoes (which she is still getting used to).  The walk didn’t last much longer than the video, because I got tired of walking in circles and stopping her from waddling into the street.  But it was fun while it lasted.  See here…

I’ll try to catch up more with everything else that’s been going on soon.  Right now, I have to run.

Lots of love to everyone!

Ketchup!

Remember in the movie, Pulp Fiction, when Mia tells the tomato joke?  How the baby tomato was lagging behind the mama and the papa tomato, so the papa went back and squished the baby and said, “Ketchup!”

Okay, that actually doesn’t have anything to do with what I’m going to post here tonight, except for that I am trying to catch up on my posting here.  What’s that you say?  I haven’t posted in… how long?!  Are you serious?  Oh no.  Then I better do some serious catching up.  But so as not to bore you all (all two of you who are still checking in here) to death, I’ll do it this way:  I’ll post photos from the time since my last post here, with no more than two sentences to go with each picture.  Sound fair and manageable?  Well then.  Away we go!

Holiday Photo

We had to take a family Christmas photo!  But since we didn’t have Kane home with us to be in the picture, I decided it should just be of the three lovely girls.

shirt for button

Shaelyn introduced Eila to her belly button, and for the next many days, Eila was very fixated on it.  Her fixation included altering her style of dress to ensure maximum access to said belly button at all times.

Kirby, Ramen and a baby

Eila may or may not have been spotted in her play pen, playing with a video game controller (don’t know the proper name for it) while a stuffed Kirby sat idly by, and a packet of Ramen noodles also somehow appears in the photo.  I think Eila was missing her papa.

For the next four pictures, I have to share a story.  As an awesome present, Bubba (Kate’s mom, the girls’ grandma), paid for Kate, Lori, Shaelyn, Davia and Eila to go on a special Holiday Express train ride through the wilderness of Portland.  The train was decorated all Christmasy, and Santa Claus was even on board!  By the way, it turns out that Eila, in no small way, hates Santa.  Like HATES him.  It was pretty funny.  Had the whole train laughing.  Not quite so funny, however, that I could bring myself to let go of the desperately clinging baby to dig my camera out of my purse and snap a photo.  The kid needed hugs.  So hug I did… while trying with all my might to carve that memory into my mind forever.  What?  It was wicked funny!

Eila, yes again, in the car on the way to the train.  (Before being terrified by the jolliest man on earth.)

on the train

There are Lori and Davia on the train.  See the Christmas lights and stuff?  Fun.

Speaking of Lori, she is something we have lost since the last time I wrote here.  I mean, we haven’t lost her completely.  She’s still alive and well.  Got an excellent new job, which is fantastic.  Unfortunately, the job is down in California, so we had to say goodbye to her.  We miss her lots, but with Kane coming home right before she left, the timing worked out as good as it could have.  And we’re so happy to know she’s working somewhere she feels good about and that’s treating her well.  Go, Lori!  (But come visit soon!)  And actually, for the sake of this post, she’s still around until after New Year’s, as you’ll see below.

reunion

Went down to the SF bay area in CA for Christmas, and finally after way too long, we met back up with Kane!!  Hooray!  Here you can see Eila and her long lost Papa, reunited in baggage claim.

Now, I have to say here that a highlight of our California trip wad definitely the cookie decorating party and competition we attended at Kane’s parents’ house.  Here’s a teaser picture of that for you:

And soon I will put a link to a cookie party post (with many more photos) HERE.  (There are too many great photos from that to fit into this ketchup post.)

christmas eve

Also, way too many Christmas photos to post, but I’ll try to stick a few random ones in here.  The above was taken Christmas Eve, at my mom’s house in California.

And a couple more Christmas Eve shots:

This one was taken of S and D and their sweet and awesome cousin, Rosalind, right as they were all about to (try and) go to sleep on Christmas Eve.

And here’s Rosalind again…

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Christmas morning now.  Here you see the stockings, hung with care, and then stuffed with love.

xmas morn

Here’s our first riser of the Christmas morn, Shaelyn.  Well, first after the baby and myself, of course.

tickets to a play

A few days post-Christmas, some of us at my mom’s house were lucky enough to be offered a chance to buy tickets to a play!  With some of our favorite performers in it, how could we resist?

The amazingly talented trio of cousins, Shaelyn, Julia and Davia, performed a spectacular show for us.

audience

The audience had some spectacular characters in it as well.

julia

Our beautiful Julia was a delight to see.

Kate and Sally

As the end of our trip neared, Kate learned that her brother, Jamey, had generously agreed to let her bring home this awesome, yellow ukulele (who now goes by the name of Sally).  That’s just the best thing ever.

More Christmas!

After a punctual yet grueling trip home, we were met back in Oregon by our dear friend, Lori, who had cleaned the whole house and arranged a lovely Christmas scene to behold.  More Christmas!!  (It was now New Year’s Eve.)

Kane's Mancumbers

We have a long-standing tradition of celebrating New Year’s Eve with home spa treatments, and Kane is never one to pass up a chance to soothe his tired eye lids with some refreshing cucumber slices.

mix and match eye patch

It can be hard to choose between the black tea bag eye treatment and the cucumber one.  Davia wasn’t bothered though – she chose both!

lights

After trying our best (unsuccessfully) to stay up until midnight, New Year’s Day was spent relaxing, watching a movie, enjoying a nice brunch, and – for Eila – getting tangled up in a string of lights.

Eila the Torpedo Lifter

SO… holidays have passed now, and we’re all settling back in to “normal” life.  Kane’s back at work at Laika (hooray!), the girls are back at school, and Kate and Eila are spending their days playing with giraffes and fairies, reading books, doing dishes and laundry (etc.), trying to keep up with the demands of the house and family life, and looking forward to catching up with S and D (and then, later, Kane) when they all come home from their respective places of Responsibilities.  Oh, and of course, weight lifting, as you can see above.  Eila is very strong.  Sometimes Kate can’t even lift a twelve pack!

Kate and Puppet

And what’s going on RIGHT now, you ask?  Well, I got a few hours to myself today when Kane took all three girls to an art museum in Portland.  What is a mom to do with herself in her designated time off?  Why, play with puppets of course.  I would like to say that this picture is not representative of the majority of my time spent alone at home this afternoon.  But that would be misleading.  I spent more time than I would like to admit playing with puppets.  What?  They’re fun.

Anyway, it’s been a pleasure catching up you, and I hope to be posting more soon, as we’re getting settled back into what we very loosely describe as “our normal routine”.

Be well!  xoxox

Cookie Party!

What’s more fun than a cookie decorating party and competition?  Not much.

A bunch of us gathered at Kane’s parents’ house for just such an occasion a couple days before Christmas, and boy was that fun!

Eila and her cookie

Eila’s cookie didn’t last long, and it probably should have won in the category of “best disappearing cookie!”

Cookie making is madness.  Look at all this crazy fun:

Saturday Market

If you’ve been to Portland any time since the mid 70′s, you’ve probably heard of the Portland Saturday Market.  It’s a huge, outdoor event.  You could call it a craft fair, but it’s really so much more than that, with various entertainment, an awesome selection of food and drinks, and tons of amazing locally crafted art and other goods for sale.  And it really is huge.  So fun!

Anyway, we took our Thanksgiving visitors there this past Saturday and had a great time.  See it here!

The kids’ favorite thing about the Market is its world-famous Elephant Ears.  (Sweet, fried, whole grain dough things with your choice of delicious toppings.)

I think everyone had a pretty good time.  I know I did.  It was really special having all our visitors here for Thanksgiving, and I think the whole weekend was a great success.  I hope it was worth the long drive for all of them, as they all came up from California by car.  We really appreciated that they made that trip to be with us over the holiday.  Such a special time.

Hope everyone else had a nice Thanksgiving and long weekend.

Love to all!

Election Night at Our House

I know Election Day was some days ago, but I’m just getting around to posting about it now.  What a night it was!
We had an Election Night “party”, which means Shaelyn, Davia, Eila, Lori and I hung out at home, waiting for the election to be over.  Well, not just waiting.  We also monitored the event through various internet news sources as the evening progressed.  But I think all five of us were looking forward to it being over.  (Maybe not Eila.)

To prepare ourselves, we purchased the following provisions:

…as well as frozen Indian food for dinner.  We were too stressed out to cook.  Elections are tense times!

While Lori sat glued to her computer, shouting out numbers, expletives, colors (mostly “red” and “blue”) and cheers, I was too anxious to pay close attention.  So I did things like shower.  I may have showered twice.

Here is how Shaelyn and Davia spent the night, in front of the TV…

They were in front of the TV, but they weren’t watching election coverage.  They were watching The Cosby Show.

(Oh, and… uh… don’t worry about those things that look like very unwell infants flopped on either side of the girls.  Those are just their zombie babies.)

At one point, I thought it would be cute to make a news-coverage-style video with Eila, but that didn’t turn out so well.  Just well enough for me to make this…

And that’s a wrap!

We all went to bed pretty happy that night anyway.

Party, Party, a Pumpkin-Carving Party!

This is a little late, I know.  You’ve probably all taken down any Halloween decorations you may have put up.  Your costumes are back on a shelf in the garage.  Your jack-o-lanterns are in the compost bin out back.  Of course, that’s YOU, not us.  Our jack-o-lanterns are rotting on our front porch.  Fake (and some real) cobwebs remain draped over the bushes in the front yard, and lanyards of skulls and skeletons and pumpkins are randomly draped around the house.  I’m pretty sure one of the girls is still wearing her Halloween costume.

But anyway, better late than never.  A day or two before Halloween, we had our annual pumpkin carving party.  By “annual”, I mean it happened last year too.  By “party”, I mean there were decorations and a celebratory vibe.  No guests required at a party at our house, although this year we did happen to have one.  When the girls got home from school, I had staged the carving area for them.

Then, let the fun begin!

It was a good time.

Happy Birthday, Eila!!!

Eila is one year old today!

Exactly one year ago today, I was snuggled in bed with my husband and our hours-old baby girl, in a beautiful room at the best Birth Center in Portland, OR.  (If you want to see our beautiful room, click on “Madrona” at the bottom of this page.)  We were exhausted from a long night but in complete awe of our new daughter and of what had just happened.  She had been born around 2:30 in the morning, so we were probably in and out of sleep by this time.  (As I write this it’s 6:30 am.)  But whether asleep or awake, we were definitely snuggled together in bed, as that’s where we were lucky enough to spend the next two days after her birth.  We were waited on hand and foot, our every need anticipated by the awesome staff at the birth center.  And Eila never left our sides.  I remember it as completely magical.

(The two big sisters were at our house with Bubba, Kate’s mom, and came to visit their parents and new little sister a few hours after this.  Missing them was the hardest – and maybe the only hard – part about being in the birth center.  But we knew they were having a great time with their beloved Bubba.)

Right now, as I’m writing this, Eila is standing at the front window of the house house rolling a little toy car along the window sill.  Uh oh, she has just started whimpering.  I guess I had better go play with my big one-year-old girl!  First, a few pictures.  (Of course!)

And I haven’t got one of her today yet.  I just tried taking a “One Year Old” video, but I’m having a hard time loading it.  So I’ll just leave you with a few classics.  Some major milestones in Eila’s first year…

Happy Birthday, to the sweetest, fiercest, boldest, most loving and charming 1-year-old this side of Jupiter!

We love you, Eila.

Happy 9th Birthday, Shaelyn and Davia!

Today is Shaelyn and Davia’s 9th Birthday!!

Most of my older photos of them are not dated, so the pictures below are probably not in perfect chronological order.  Besides the photos, I’ve included excerpts from a journal I kept for the first several years of their lives.

Here you can watch them grow before your very eyes, as I have.  Hope you enjoy it.

“I love twins.  (Mine especially of course)  I’ve been telling people that I want to someday adopt 5 more sets of twins.  I do.  I bet not every set is as wonderful as Shaelyn and Davia though.”

- Kate, January 19, 2004

“What beautiful girls I have!  I swear they get cuter every day.  They’re just gorgeous.  I was looking at them yesterday and thinking about how when you look at them you can tell they’re just always going to be beautiful.  They couldn’t not be.  They’re just perfect.”

- Kate, February 3, 2004

“These girls are totally obsessed with frogs.  They love frogs.  They ask for frogs and babble about frogs any chance they get.  They’ll find a frog in any book that has one, even if it’s only a teeny tiny one down in the corner on some page that doesn’t even mention frogs in the words.  When we sing “Old Mac Donald” and get to the “had a…” part, they always say “froggy!”  I put up some pictures of frogs for them that they love, and I put pictures of frogs in their photo album.  Anything that they see that even remotely resembles a frog (for example, a crocodile or the avocado on Lori’s burrito), they’ll ask “Froggy? Froggy?”  My cute little weirdos.”

- Kate, February 26, 2005

*Cut to 5 years later…

******************

“Hooray!  They finally know that one of them is named Shaelyn!  They’re sitting in their high chairs facing eachother, and I just asked Davia who “this” is, pointing to Shaelyn.  “Sha-sha” she said.  YES!!!  And then Shaelyn patted both of her hands on her chest and said “Sha Sha!”  YES!!!  For the past month or two, they’ve just both been “Da da”.”

- Kate, January 7th, 2005

“Also over there today, they were playing in the planter where, a couple months ago, I told them to be careful of the baby lettuces.  Shaelyn said to Davia “That’s baby salad, Day Day!”

When something happens that upsets Davia, she cries for a little bit, then she says “It’s okay, Davia.”

Another favorite thing of theirs to do is running away.  And they say “Run away! Run away!” as they go.  It’s sort of a pain, because they do it outside.  As soon as we get out there, they’re half way down the block, giggling, “Run away!”

Today we were at Longs to get wipes, and I was pushing the girls in the stroller.  Shaelyn leaned over toward Davia and said “I love my sweet baby girl.”

- Kate, August 22, 2005

“This morning while me and S and D were all snuggled in bed together, just waking up, Shaelyn pinched Davia.  (I forget why.)  Davia said, ‘Are you an earwig, Shaelyn?  You don’t pinch people!’”

- Kate, November 22, 2006

“Lately Shaelyn has been calling people ‘old girl’.  As in, ‘Don’t say that, silly old girl!’”

- Kate, November 25, 2006

“We rode up in Bubba’s car – me, shaelyn, Davia, Renny and Bubba.  On the way back, we stopped at In n Out for fries and milk shakes, and we played games.  The best game we played was “I’m thinking of a thing” where you give clues about what (or who) you’re thinking about.  Renny did the first few (her first two things being Shaelyn and Davia), and I did a couple.  Then we asked the girls if they wanted to try.  Shaelyn went first, saying “I’m thinking of a thing… with sharp teeth… that bites you… (some other clues that I forget)… that says wuff wuff” A dog?  “No… that says meow… with sharp teeth” (more clues that I forget) A cat?  “No… that starts with a… it has sharp teeth… a zebra!!”  Then Davia went:  “I’m thinking of a thing… that’s round… and squishy…” A ball?  A bagel?  “No… that’s yellow… that’s on my nose” A sock? (She was holding a sock next to her nose)  “No…” What is it?  “A booger!’”

- Kate, November 25, 2006

“This morning, we were talking about making pancakes, and Shaelyn said, ‘To make pancakes, we need to get the pancake batteries!’”

-Kate, March 10, 2007

“At night, when I’m putting the girls to bed, before affirmations and after stories, we all say a couple things we’re thankful for.  Davia for some reason always says something like “I’m thankful for the Julia that I eat!”  Or “I’m thankful for eating Shaelyn and Bubba!”  Last night, when I asked Shaelyn what she was thankful for, she said “I’m thankful for you, mama!”  Melt my heart!  Then when she saw how happy that made me, she said about 10 more times.”

-Kate, March 10, 2007

“I love these girls so much.  I’ve been worrying lately about money and stuff, because I’m still not working.  But this morning, before the girls’ nap and after a banana breakfast, they were laying on the living room floor, and I was practicing our signs by signing to them (which they absolutely love)…  And I was looking at them, and I realized how much better they make me feel about everything.  No problem I could have now matters half as much as having these girls matters.  They’re more important to me than everything else in my life combined.  If I lost everything in the world except them, I would still be so much more happy than I ever thought I could be.  As long as (we) are together, any problems I might have now seem totally insignificant.  I can’t even believe how lucky I am to have these girls.”

-Kate, April 3, 2004

Nine years later, I still feel the same way.  (Of course, as our family has grown, that feeling has grown to encompass my wonderful husband and newest baby.)  When I first met Shaelyn and Davia and held them in my arms, they were more beautiful and amazing and perfect than I ever could have hoped for.  And every day, as I watch them grow into the amazing people they are becoming, I am blown away by their spirit, their insights and curiosity, their courage and strength, their beauty and grace, their spunk and their wit, and their huge, glowing hearts.  I couldn’t have dreamed they’d turn out like this.  I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us, and for the world, next.  And I am so very grateful to have them in my life.

Happy Birthday, big girls!  We love you!!

Another Busy Morning, In a Busy Month

Mornings – especially school mornings – are every mother’s favorite time of day.  Ha ha!  See what I did there?  That was a joke.  In that it couldn’t be farther from the truth.  School mornings were sent by the devil to punish mothers for having children, populating the world with little angels.  Devils hate angels.  Is that right?  Something like that.

Anyway, my point is that a school morning is a very painful thing for a mom.  Or at least for many moms.  Lunches have to be made.  Shoes have to be located.  Papers have to be signed.  Jackets, toothbrushes, backpacks, “she took my blah blah blah!”, “I can’t find my blah blah blah!”, “Where did you hide my blah blah blah?!”, etc.  You get the picture.  And mom’s trying to deal with all this while still only half awake.  And have I mentioned that my kids’ school starts at 7:45am?

This morning actually went relatively smoothly, especially considering that I was up part of the night last night with a sick baby.  (Don’t worry, she’s made a full recovery.)  But it was still a morning.  I caught a little of it on video to show you here.  But keep in mind, this was one of the more mild segments of the morning.  And this morning was one of the more mild mornings.  There’s often screaming and tears.  This isn’t that bad…

(If anyone’s wondering, when I said “Quick, before Memory leaves,” I wasn’t threatening them with amnesia or anything.   I was referring to our wonderful neighbor who drives them to school in the mornings, who happens to be named Memory.)
In other news, October is a very busy month for us!  All three girls have birthdays, and our favorite holiday wraps it all up.  Kane’s coming home for a visit, and Grandpa Jim (Kate’s dad) is coming to visit as well.  The following display is on our entryway closet and is maintained mostly by S and D, with a little input from adults:

Busy Month

Wait, what?!  Does that say “TWO DAYS LEFT” at the bottom?  Uh oh, I’ve got stuff to do.  (That’s the big girls’ countdown to their birthday.)  Eek!

Love to all, and Happy October!

Our Geocache Adventure! (with photojournal)

Ever heard of geocaching?  If not, I’ll summarize by saying it’s a sort of a worldwide treasure hunt.  I use the word “treasure” there loosely.  It’s not a search for gold or jewels or doubloons or anything like that.  It’s more of a treasure of the spirit.  Of community and adventure and problem-solving and fun.  But there is some tangible treasure involved.  Hey, we made out yesterday with a small Papa Smurf figurine.  Try telling Davia that’s not treasure.

Anyway, if you’re the type who enjoys learning about something on the internet with a video, here’s geocaching in a video:

If you’re the type who needs a verbal description of geocaching, here’s what they say it is on their website:

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

And here’s the rules:

  1. If you take something from the geocache (or “cache”), leave something of equal or greater value.
  2. Write about your find in the cache logbook.
  3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com.

But if you’re the type of person who learns best about something from a photo journal documenting the subject matter, you’re in luck!  Because we went geocaching yesterday, and I took pictures.  Enjoy!

The team of explorers included myself, Lori, Shaelyn, Davia, the girls’ neighborhood friend Hope, Eila and Roxie the dog.

Three girls and a dog, on a mission.

Our littlest explorer, Eila.

We used a GPS app specifically for geocaching on Lori’s phone.

The biggest explorers.

Davia came prepared with basket for collecting treasures.

Lori’s phone tells us we’re in the general vicinity of the treasure!

Shaelyn, under a tree at the site.

Every once in awhile Lori would read a clue or someone would announce an idea. Here, an inspired Davia, runs.

Shaelyn searches, suggests the perspective of apples as treasure.

Girls on site, still looking.

Davia and Shaelyn keep hunting, in their own separate ways.

Maybe it’s hidden near this old house!

Lori reads a clue from her phone.

Eila is watching all the action.

We learn that this house is the oldest in our whole county!

Shaelyn’s looking…

Eila quite enjoys geocaching.

Getting warmer!

It’s gotta be around here somewhere!!

The treasure is located! Success!!

So exciting! We did it!

It feels good to find treasure. See Davia rejoice here.

Once you find the treasure capsule, you get to open it.

Each geocache has a log book in it. This was Kate’s favorite part.

Lori enters our discovery in the log book.

Our furriest explorer.

What a fun time we had!
